PNG to WebP Converter
Convert PNG images to WebP in your browser, keeping transparency. Adjustable quality and a before/after preview, with no upload.

What this tool does
PNG is lossless and handles transparency well, which also makes PNG files large, especially for photographs and screenshots with gradients. WebP can store the same picture, including an alpha channel, at a fraction of the size when you accept a small amount of lossy compression. This tool converts PNGs to WebP and shows exactly how much space you gain, if any.
The best candidates are photos, rendered images and large screenshots. Flat graphics with few colours, pixel art and small icons often compress very well as PNG already, so WebP can be a similar size or larger. Sharp edges and text can also show ringing at low quality. Try a quality of 85 or higher for graphics and compare with the slider.
Conversion happens entirely in your browser: the PNG is decoded, drawn on a canvas, and encoded as WebP by the browser's own encoder. Transparent pixels stay transparent. The browser's encoder is lossy here, so keep your PNG if you need a pixel-exact master.
How to use it
- 1Add one or more PNG files.
- 2Choose a quality. Use a higher value (85 to 95) for screenshots, text and logos.
- 3Press Convert to WebP.
- 4Inspect the result with the before/after slider, paying attention to edges and gradients.
- 5Download the WebP files individually or as a ZIP.
Supported formats
Input: PNG (including transparency). Output: WebP (lossy, with alpha). Requires a browser that can encode WebP.
Privacy
This tool runs in your browser. The data you provide is processed on your device and is not sent to our servers.
Limitations
- The conversion is lossy: the WebP is not pixel-identical to the PNG. Keep the PNG for masters and for further editing.
- Small or flat-colour PNGs can get larger as WebP. The tool reports the real size change.
- Fully lossless WebP is not available because browser canvases only expose a quality setting.
- Animated PNGs are converted using their first frame. Very large images (over 100 megapixels) are refused.
- Browsers without WebP encoding support cannot use this tool; it is disabled rather than producing the wrong format.
FAQ
Does WebP keep PNG transparency?
Yes, WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent. Semi-transparent edges can look slightly different at low quality settings.
Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?
Images with large flat areas and few colours, like logos and icons, are already very small as PNG. WebP at a high quality setting can end up the same size or larger. In that case keep the PNG.
Is the result identical to the PNG?
No. The browser's WebP encoder is lossy, so the output differs slightly from the original pixels. Use a high quality value if fidelity matters.
Is my file uploaded?
No. Processing happens locally in your browser.
